Google has begun allowing some of its own software engineers to use Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 model for coding tasks through its internal Antigravity platform, according to a report from TechRepublic this week. Access is quota-limited and sits alongside Google's own Gemini models rather than replacing them.
The move is notable because Google is simultaneously one of Anthropic's largest investors, having committed roughly $40 billion to the AI safety-focused lab, and one of its most direct competitors in large language models. A Google spokesperson said "Gemini remains our primary and foundational model" for internal development work, framing the Claude access as a limited, engineering-driven option rather than a strategic shift.
The decision comes as large tech companies increasingly let engineering teams choose between multiple frontier AI coding assistants based on task fit, rather than mandating a single in-house tool, even when doing so means opening the door to a competitor's product.
