Apple Music plans to add visible labels to songs that are "materially generated using AI," giving listeners a way to tell when a track was substantially created by artificial intelligence rather than human musicians. The move extends Apple's existing AI Transparency Tags initiative, which the company has already applied to other forms of content.
The change addresses a problem that has grown more urgent as AI music generators have improved: streaming platforms increasingly struggle to distinguish synthetic songs from human-created ones, especially as AI tools get better at mimicking specific genres, vocal styles and production techniques. Without clear labeling, listeners and artists alike have had no reliable way to know how a given track was made.
Apple has not detailed exactly how it will determine which songs qualify for the label or how it plans to verify submissions from independent artists and labels, an enforcement question that has dogged similar transparency efforts across the industry. Rival platforms have faced growing pressure from musicians' groups to adopt comparable disclosure requirements as AI-generated music floods streaming catalogs.
