OpenAI has rolled out a Messages integration for ChatGPT on macOS, allowing the assistant to read conversations, summarize threads, draft replies and send messages on a user's behalf when given permission. The feature turns ChatGPT into something closer to a personal assistant embedded directly in Apple's native messaging app rather than a separate chat window.
The integration reflects a broader push by OpenAI to move ChatGPT beyond a standalone chatbot and into the everyday apps people already use for communication and work. Similar permission-based integrations have already extended ChatGPT's reach into email, calendars and file systems on various platforms.
Privacy safeguards remain a central question for this kind of feature: users must explicitly grant ChatGPT access to their Messages data, and OpenAI says the assistant only acts on conversations when asked. Still, the move is likely to intensify competition with Apple's own AI-powered Messages features and with other assistants seeking a foothold in day-to-day communication.
